German Restitution

As we all know from the Anita Halpin case earlier this week, finally those works of art stolen or extorted from their Jewish owners in Nazi Germany are being restored to their inheritors. There is some disquiet at the fact that they are then as with Ms. Halpin, turning around and selling them.

In fact more than disquiet: this comment makes me feel rather ill:

Meanwhile, Martin Roth, the director of Dresden’s art
museum, said last week that were it not for the system of restitution,
collectors "would never have dreamt of acquiring such works" which had
previously been regarded as beyond their reach, in museums.

"Paintings
formerly owned by Jews which found their way into German museums
because of injustice have to be handed back – period," he said. "But if
these heirs are being exploited by the market, I have the right to
criticise. It is my duty to protect the state’s art collections. What
hangs in our museums belongs to every citizen."

What hangs in museums belongs to every citizen? What, to the people? The Volk? Isn’t that part of the attitude that started the whole problem? That said Volk has greater rights than the individual?

  1. Good point, Tim. However, I’m more intrigued in how that tin-pot commie woman is going to wriggle her way out of the fact that she’s now a millionairess (can I say millionairess?). I’m used to lawyers wriggling and sliming around to justify their existence, but a treasurer of the NUJ! As a journalist, I want to know why the next-to-useless NUJ is so politically biased. So, come on… tell us what you hope to do with £20 million and how do you square that with your redistributionist beliefs? God I hate communists!

  2. Ein volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer.
    Times change, Germans don’t.

  3. Hey, we lawyers don’t have to take that “wriggling and sliming around” stuff from a journalist!!

  4. Yeah better they hang in some tiny little dark room, as in a museum where everybody can see them. God forbid!
Don’t mistake me, they have every right to reclaim their property, but it’s still a shame.
and Jeremycj with all obliged respect
    Fuck Off!

  5. Lawyers and journalists. Yes… I know we’re rated lower than any other profession. That’s because no one understands us 🙁

  6. “Lawyers and journalists. Yes… I know we’re rated lower than any other profession. That’s because no one understands us…”
Or is it because we understand you only too well?

  7. How can journalists be worse than lawyers? Most of us are cheaper than lawyers, we try to tell the truth and we don’t chase ambulances or defend the indefensible. I’d also like to make the distinction here between journalists and commentators. For instance, Polly is not a journalist. She’s a commentator who writes misleading polemics. Therefore she is worthy of the public’s ire and is indeed worse than a lawyer.

Well, one out of four ain’t bad.
