Sadly, this was always highly likely:

An award-winning reporter who fell foul of the Russian authorities for
her fearless and critical reporting of the war in Chechnya was shot
dead yesterday as she stepped out of the lift in her Moscow apartment
block.

Prosecutors believe that the killing of Anna Politkovskaya was linked
to her work, which had frequently brought her into conflict with the
police and military. She was a critic
of President Vladimir Putin of Russia and had tirelessly chronicled the
killings, torture and beatings of civilians by Russian servicemen in
the breakaway republic.

She was poisoned on her way to report the Beslan siege as well. Quite who did this is unlikely to ever be known…who will rid me of this turbulent priest being perhaps the most that anyone higher up had to do with it.

Moscow’s chief prosecutor, Yuri Syomin, said that he was treating the death as murder.

Don’t hold your breath for a conviction.
