Marmite

I have, unfortunately, as part of a little mid-afternoon snack, just had my first taste of the new style Marmite.

I deliberately didn’t get the squeezy jars, going for the glass, hoping that in fact they were making two types. Nope. The thinner stuff is in both the plastic and the glass bottles.

Just in case any of you have not run through your old supplies yet, allow me to tell you that the new stuff is

DISGUSTING

I’m off to see if I can find that bloke in Norfolk who claimed to be making gallows. I’ve a few executives I’m interested in trying one out on.

Who is with me, in defense of one of our culinary glories? The Campaign for Real Marmite anyone?

    I heard that gallows feller on the radio a while back, talking about his “six shooter” – a model that hung six at once. The interviewer was outraged, and this chap, a farmer as well I think, argued “Well, if I didn’t sell them, somebody else would”
    “Is anybody else making these then?” came the response.
    “No.”
    Well, I laughed.
    Marmite is the devil’s arse cleft sweat. Fact.

    I also am a devotee of Marmite. If they have debased it, let us set up in competition with “The Real Marmite” company.
    As freetraders, we may not even think of hanging the executives responsible, we may however think about and even enact the introduction of a rival product.
    ps – only half joking about setting up a rival product.

    What – that is outragous – Did you note that the Veggie and Halal market has failed Bovril so they are going back to the original beef recipe. When will they learn.

    Please tell me you are wrong. I live on marmite. I love it. I won’t be able to cope if it is different.
    I love it so much I can eat it out of the jar (yes, I know that is disgusting).
    Thinner? ARGH. Nooooo. It is supposed to be brown gloop that gets stuck everywhere.
    I’ve just purchased a new big jar. If it is different, I will be seriously blogging to try and prompt a coke-style turnaround to the old recipe.

    Wow – Marmite. That takes me back to cold cold days in Manchester. Now I am craving some. The im sure it will cost me 6 dollars for a jar over here in the US. I hate you for getting me hooked on this idea – now i need some. Thanks.

    The truth is, all UK food manufacturers are under pressure from Nanny Blair to reduce salt levels in foods. They’ve already destroyed baked beans and tomato soup and they even want a go at Stilton. Oddly enough, food produced outside the UK and imported doesn’t face the same salt sanctions.     One of my aims is to champion Britain, and Britishness, in all its guises; however, one must draw the line somewhere.
    As a hater I have avoided it for as long as I can remember, but I’m intending to buy some and try it again. I think a lot of people taste it, and hate it, as a child and never go near it again. Perhaps I will like it 20 years on.

    Yaxlich is very disappointed to hear that Marmite has changed it’s style. He is a big fan having been breast fed it from an early age (8).
    He is off to CostCutter tomorrow morning to stock up on old style Marmite. He will then write a petition to the manufacturers to demand bringing back the old recipe.
    He would like to thank Mr Worstall for bringing this to his attention.

    The Great Redacto and I have four slices of toast for breakfast heaped up with butter and Marmite. Can’t live without it. Making all the stuff runny is a mistake of British Airways tailfin proportions.

    I bought a huge jar a couple of days before I found out I was moving to Russia. As I can’t take foodstuffs with me, and I simply refuse to throw out a huge jar of Marmite, I’m eating it 2-3 times a day. Perhaps some of you lot could come and help me out with eating it?

    I believe it’s very good for fending off mosquitoes.
    Tim adds: Indeed it is. But you have to eat it first. You want the yeast to be coming out in your sweat. Which is a problem if, as with this new stuff, it actually tastes like gnat’s piss.
    I mean, god God! it actually soaks into bread now, instead of sitting on top like a hardened carapace!

    This is very sad news. Thanks for the warning Tim.I shall go shopping later today and buy as much of the old marmite as I can carry, maybe that will see out my declining years. If I outlast that cache, I suppose I’ll have to try … vegemite.

    It hasn’t occured to anyone that this might be a ploy to increase sales of Marmite? 1) Fiendish Marmite Execs change Marmite recipe. 2) Warehouses cleared of existing unsaleable Marmite mountain as wave of Marmite nostalgics buy lifetime supply, thunderous articles in the press denounce Fiendish Marmite Execs 3) Repentant Marmite execs tearfully confess their error and put real Marmite back on the shelves. 4) National celebrations at return of real Marmite; Fiendish Marmite Execs laugh all the way to bank.
    Tim adds: Could be. Personally, I don’t much care, as long as real Marmite becomes available again.

    I cannot believe that Marmite as we Kmow it has been killed off,It is definitely MURDER!!!I have brought up my whole family on it.The new ??? is not Marmite ,it should not be allowed to use that name,it is horrible,I feel really depressed.
