Ruth Kelly

The Gorsefox has an interesting little piece about Ruth Kelly.

My, doesn’t power corrupt?

  1. Which bit do you regard as corrupt – an MP supporting residents’ objections to proposed developments, or a Secretary of State asking councils to meet their housebuilding targets?

Possibly that fact that, when she relied on constituents support she was happy to support their views and represent them – now she has her snout in the trough of a cabinet post, they can go hang as far as she is concerned…
Not that that makes her unusual among politicians, of course!

  3. Tim,
I’m with Jim on this one. There seems to be a clear division between her campaigns on constituency matters and her adherence to collective responsibility once within Cabinet.
One could say that John Reid’s attendance at a rally against the closure of Monklands Hospital by the Scottish Executive, while implementing hospital closures in England as Secretary of State for Health, was conduct of a far wrose character. Opportunist populism is not corrupt per se.

  4. Gorse Fox sees it more as hypocrisy than corruption. And he disagrees that it is “collective responsibility”. It is irresponsible and ill thought out.

  5. Her appointment or the policy?
