Tsk. Numeracy guys, numeracy.

While beggars operating in the poorer areas of the city earn far less,
the 13,000 whose pitches are in the more well-to-do areas earn between
them an average of five million rupees per day, or almost £58.

Economists estimate that Bombay’s annual beggar economy is worth about a billion rupees, or more than £11 million, tax-free.

13,000 earning 5 million a day is 65 billion. Or, 58 pounds each a day over a year is 275 million quid or so. Or, at 86 rupees to the pound 5 million rupees is 58 thousand pounds, which divided by 13,000 people is 4 pounds 47 pence each per day.

A billion rupees is indeed around 11 million quid though.

Something got mangled there eh? The 13,000 beggars collectively receive 5 million rupees a day, or 58,000, which is 4 and a half quid a day each, or several times the average Indian wage?
