The Dickin Medal

Described as the VC for animals, there’s an exhibition opening about the Dickin Medal. Some past winners:

Other animals featured in the exhibition include Rob, the SAS dog who
made more than 20 parachute drops in the Second World War; Winkie, a
pigeon who saved the lives of an air crew ditched at sea by carrying
home details of their position; and Roselle, a labrador who led her
blind owner to safety from the 78th floor of the World Trade Centre
before it collapsed on September 11, 2001.

Sorry? A parachuting dog? Anyone got more information on this?

From the home page:

Rob - Collie
War Dog No. 471/332 Special Air Service
Date of Award: 22 January 1945
“Took part in landings during North
African Campaign with an Infantry unit and later served with a Special
Air Unit in Italy as patrol and guard on small detachments lying-up in
enemy territory. His presence with these parties saved many of them
from discovery and subsequent capture or destruction. Rob made over 20
parachute descents.”

How do you stick a parachute on a dog?

  1. Can’t help with parachutes for dogs but: “During World War II, a factory in Monmouth made parachutes for pigeons to enable them to be dropped into France. . . ”

    Not to laugh:
“A WWII medal awarded to an heroic pigeon whose story inspired a Hollywood film, is to go on display. Gustav, trained by Frederick Jackson, of Cosham, Hampshire, was the first of the RAF’s Homing Pigeon Service to bring back news of D-Day to the UK. The bird’s Dickin Medal, one of 32 awarded to pigeons who carried secret messages during WWII, is due to go on show at Portsmouth’s D-Day museum.”

I guess suggesting super glue would get me in trouble with the RSPCA.
I don’t know how they attached a parachute to the dog in your article, but this site:
    http://www.k9storm.com/home.html
Has a picture of a para-rescue type action man freefalling with his dog.
According to the blurb both man and dog used oxygen during the jump, which raises even more mind boggling questions.

  3. Rob and the Dickin Medal

A week or so back I posted about the Dickin Medal, the so called VC for animals. I used the example of Rob, who supposedly made 20 parachute jumps during his service with the SAS in WWII. Rather a WTF?

  4. See the Times today, to see it was actually a hoax. the dog was a family dog, lent to a SAS quartermaster who decided that he didn’t really want to return him, so he decided to send him on ONE parachute jump and make up a story to tell the real owners, about the vital importance of their pet to the war effort. That one jump was not accomplished, but the story got to running, and in the end, it seemed that ROB had gone to africa and italy and jumped 20 times. nice eh?
