Dangerous Stuff

This sort of talk always gives me the complete willies:

Police forces should be allowed to fast-track job applicants from
ethnic minorities, despite the practice being against the law, a
leading officer has claimed.

No, nothing about race or fast tracking. Rather, when a senior police officer says, in effect, "We should be able to break the law in order to enforce it more efficiently" I start to get worried. It doesn’t take long to go from police hiring tactics to methods of questioning, the rights of suspects and so on with such a mindset at the top.

    The second paragraph says:
The Chief Constable of Cheshire, Peter Fahy, is appealing to the Government to change the law on positive discrimination

June 2008: The Chief Constable of Woofordshire appaeals to the government to repeal the rights of suspects so that he can meet government targets faster without having to do more work.
    Does that scare you Matt?

I don’t understand your point. Police Officers constantly call for changes in the law. The issue I think Tim is concerned about is them breaking the law.

  4. Tim,
The very fact that Fahy is unembarrassed to proclaim that he is ACPO’s head of diversity tells one all one need ever know about the mindset of those who lead the police; who, after all, have no duties apart from the detection and prevention of crime.

Maybe you’re right Matt, but there was a time when a top copper would have been embarrassed to do it. Nowadays, and particularly under this regime, they seem to think trashing the law is okay so long as you’re in a blue uniform.
This guy’s not the first either. What about Brian Paddick condoning his partner’s use of an illegal drug in his/their own home?

Ok I’m more confused. As far as I am aware he is saying he wants the law to be changed, not that he is going to break the law before it is? Surely that’s quite different?

“Police forces should be allowed to fast-track job applicants from ethnic minorities, despite the practice being against the law, a leading officer has claimed”.
I think the “desite” in the above quote is the bit that indicates he wants to do something illegal.
