New ‘pencil’ tax slammed by schools

The Government is drawing up proposals for a new tax on pencils in a bid to save trees and protect the environment.

    I figure this must be The Daily Mail’s April Fools gag. If they’d thrown in something about “lead poisoning” then I’d have been certain.
    Tim adds: The original, back in 1977, actually went on for 7 pages, as a pull our addition to the regular paper.

  2. Hmm – didn’t Milton & Rose Friedman use the pencil industry as a great example of free trade at work in Free to Choose? Clearly something worth taxing…:)

  3. A Daily Mail double!

    Along with the Houses of Parliament, it is the bestknown symbol of Britain’s political heritage.
    But now – in a move seen by critics as unhinged – the famous shiny black front door of 10 Downing Street has been seen for the last time.
    In an incredible break with some 250 years of tradition, it has been painted red – a colour normally associated with the Labour Party.

  4. I did a spoof this morning pretending PP was hacked by Hizb ut Tahrir with this image on the front page. It did well 🙂
