The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Small Shops said independent
grocers, news-gents and off-licences could not survive the ruthless
discounting from Tesco, Asda and the other big chains.

  2. Reality (part deux): not all independent grocers, news-gents and off-licences are more expensive than supermarkets. Many are less expensive. Not all of them are poorly run. None of them have enormous advertising budgets.
