Kowloon Walled City.

Following some of the links about the piece I did for TCS on Sir John Cowperthwaite (yes, I kow, so self-indulgent) I came across this site on Kowloon Walled City. I haven’t explored it thoroughly but it seems  tohave been outside thecontrol of either Hong Kong or China and thus the only example we actually have of anarcho-capitalism.

Anyone who’s got a pointer to more info will be gratefully received.

From Wikipedia:

At that time, it had 50,000 inhabitants on 0.026 km², and therefore a very high population density of 1,900,000 / km². It was allegedly the most densely populated spot on Earth.

  1. Fascinating. See here for a tour of the deserted city before its destruction in 1993, related in perfect Engrish: http://web.archive.org/web/20020208225753/www.flex.co.jp/kowloon/story/index_e.html
Sample quote: “Suddenly,’What the hell with that!?’, the chief of expedition, TONO screamed.”

  2. much of the power lay in the hands of the Triads
What a surprise. Libertarianism/anarchism => survival of the fittest => return of hierarchy and rule by thugs.
