Details, Pesky Details.

Ms. Cavendish misses a couple of (admittedly, not very important) details:

When a 31-year-old Cambridge-educated lawyer is
viciously stabbed to death in a Tube station for no apparent reason, it
plays to our deepest fears of what happens when parallel worlds collide.

That would be in the street going from the Tube station to his home.

A SOLICITOR at a corporate law firm was stabbed to death by two muggers yards from his home.

Thomas Ap Rhys Pryce, 31, suffered wounds to his head, body, legs and hands as he tried to fight off the men.

The
litigation lawyer, who worked for Linklaters in the City of London, had
been out with colleagues on Thursday evening and was returning to the
home he shared with his fiancée, Adele Eastman, in northwest London.
The couple were due to marry in September.

Mr Rhys Price called Miss Eastman at 10.50pm to say that he
expected to be home 40 minutes later. After taking a train to Kensal
Green station he walked towards his terraced house but was jumped on by
two men in their teens or early twenties.

Further:

Reviewers always mention, with a sort of
reflected pride, that “50 Cent” has been shot nine times. Their
fascination was not dented one iota by the adverts showing him carrying
a baby in one hand and a gun in the other.

  1. hmm I thought he was stabbed so the two guys could rob him. Isn’t that a reason?
Rather than being random violence – it was a violent robbery. There is a difference, surely?

  2. I wonder if they’d have attacked a Texas lawyer?

  3. They might have attacked a Texas lawyer with a gun instead. Just as dead of course, either way.

  4. Texas has a murder rate about 5-6 times that of the UK, and two to three times that of London. It’s cities are worse.

  5. Texas has a murder rate about 5-6 times that of the UK, and two to three times that of London.
That may well be the case, but I’m betting that the chances of getting shot or knifed in the street in Houston are less than getting knifed in London.

  6. There’s was about 340 murders in Houston last year, and it’s a smaller city than London by some way.
I have no idea whether your safer walking the streets of Houston than London, but how could you ever tell – I imagine the person miles walked (or time spent walking if you prefer, but it’ll be much the same thing) in London vs Houston ratio is much higher than even population ratios.

Take gang crime, primarily gang on gang, out of the Texas picture and things would look a lot different I would imagine.

There is another poster for the Fiddy film in which you can see the front view where the baby and gun are visible. It’s on the Tube.
