PG Wodehouse: Documentarist.

It’s something of a long running theme on this blog, that PG Wodehouse was not in fact a novelist or fantasist, that he really was simply a documentary writer. He observed the England of his youth and simply wrote down what happened.

There are still parts of that England extant as this quote of the year from The Observer shows:

Six hundred and ninety seven years.
Sir Thomas Ingleby’s
accurate answer to a question on an official form, asking how long the
family had lived at the present address
