Since journalists will even have a pop at trying to explain particle physics, or DNA, to the layman, I have always been puzzled that their attempts to explain Chomsky’s Great Thought makes it sound awfully lame: people are good at speaking languages because they have an inbuilt ability to speak languages. Rather like the Tale of Peter Rabbit: lettuce sends you to sleep because of its soporific qualities. Come to think of it, so does Chomsky.
