Monbiot on Civli Liberties.

Yes, I know I make fun of many of his views but here he’s absolutely right. Full marks Georges spot on.

You could just put an excerpt in for those of us who feel soiled by reading a grauniad monbiot entry.

I must say it’s a strange feeling actually agreeing with Georges, but for once I do, wholeheartedly.
I’ll admit seeing soap dodgers being hassled does give a momentary thrill until one realises the true meaning of the hassling. Seeing octagenarian lefties getting roughed up does not provide the same vicarious thrill.
Once the police were uniformed civilians who acted on our behalf to maintain the Queen’s Peace and protect our ancient liberties, including the right to peacefully protest. Now they are an armed agency of the state. If anyone needs further proof of this I suggest a visit to the ARSSE website (the armed forces newsboard and discussion site). Coppers are now welcomed as part of the military brotherhood. Since when has plod been a soldier? He’s supposed to be one of us! A civvie with a nice uniform. That’s why he’s never been armed in the past.

I would just take issue with this from the article: “the Green party, a couple of alternative comedians, the Indymedia network and the alternative magazine Schnews have been left to defend our civil liberties almost unassisted”
Come on Georges old boy. It’s not just left-wing agitators who’ve been making the running on this. How about Samizdata? Or any number of other freedom-loving blogs.
When for once we’re on your side the least you could do is give us the credit.
