You recall that investigation by The Sunday Telegraph into late abortions? Where BPAS sent the woman off to Spain to have an abortion which would be illegal both here and there? The official investigation concludes:
Britain’s biggest
abortion provider was heavily censured yesterday by the chief medical
officer for the way in which it put women in touch with a Spanish
clinic willing to carry out the procedure beyond the UK legal time
limit. Sir Liam Donaldson, the CMO, said the British Pregnancy Advisory
Service (BPAS) acted within the law. But he condemned the way call
staff had dealt with an undercover journalist from the Sunday
Telegraph, who claimed she was close to the 24 week legal limit for
termination and wanted an abortion.
BPAS,
which carries out 83% of all abortions after 20 weeks, often under
contract to the NHS, was told yesterday to revise its procedures and
training for its staff following an investigation by Sir Liam of the
allegations published in October last year. The newspaper claimed that
BPAS was helping women to break the UK law.
Now whether or not there should be a 24 week limit is beside the question here. The fact is that there is (except in cases of handicap or severe danger to the mother’s life, neither of which were claimed here) so why were they "heavily censured". Why wasn’t someone charged? Conspiracy to murder? Conspiracy to procure an illegal abortion?
