In Praise of Norway.

The Guardian praises Norway:

But in the space of just
seven days Norway has notched up two achievements that should attract
the attention and respect of all but the most prejudiced.

The
first was to be declared the best place in the world to live in a
survey by the United Nations. This accolade is no flash in the pan.
Norway has come first in this 177-nation survey for the past five
years, since it ousted Canada from top spot in 2001. More importantly,
it reflects Norway’s enviable ability to sustain the elusive
combination of economic prosperity (3.75% growth expected this year)
with a strong welfare state and a clean environment.

Well, yes, although I do find it a little odd that there is no mention of oil. I’ve heard that fully 20% of GDP comes from oil…and didn’t the oil price double this year? Might that have something to do with the growth? And the clean environment bit…..Exxon gets blamed for the CO2 emissions of the oil it sells….shouldn’t Norway be too?

  1. 20 years of right leaning governments produces success according to the Guardian. So the second great achievement is what? – The Norwegians replace it with a left leaning givernment.
Good to see the Guardian being logical as ever.

  2. “givernment” was supposed to be government but actually I like my mistake.

A Guardian commentator has no understanding of externalities!!
    And you are surprised?
    Why?

  4. Whales don’t get a mention either. Somehow I think if the Nantucket stations reopened we’d be hearing about it in The Guardian.

  5. And the third achievement of Norway has to be that the second largest party in the election was Fremskrittspartiet (Progress Party).

  6. Did they mention that this was all achieved despite being a bunch of Xenophobic Eurosceptics?
    I bet they didn’t.

  7. They did mention that Norway could bottle the stuff that makes all this happen and sell it; I’m tempted to point out that they already do and it’s called “oil”.

  8. Kudos to Norway for not letting oil screw everything up.
More to the point, Norway is one of the five economies in the world with the most flexible business regulations, best contract enforcement, strongest shareholder rights, etc:

I think that has a lot to do with its success.

  9. Don’t the oil profits go into individualised accounts?
    A citizens dividend.
