Tourism in Kazakhstan

I know there’s several readers round here who know Kazakhstan quite well. Tim Newman? Greg?

Anywhoo, The Angry Economist has a buddy out in Almaty working on the prospects of the place as a tourist destination.

  1. Reminds me of a truly disgraceful but very funny survey wandering round London desks a few years ago, which included the star questions and possible responses:-
Have you insured your car this year?
    1 Yes
    2 No
    3 What’s insurance?
Do you always pay your road tax on time, or do you pay late?
    1 On time
    2 Late
    3 What’s ‘road tax’?
Do you pay your utility bills on time, or do you wait until the red ‘warning’ letter appears?
    1 On Time.
2 Wait until the ‘warning’ letter comes.
    3 What’s a ‘utility bill’?

  2. As someone who has been to Kazakhstan I recomend the minister of tourism concentrate on skiing and WCs. I remember a beautiful mountain right on the edge of Almaty. No matter where you were in the city, you could see that huge frikken mountain. Giant red square… not a big tourist draw. Modern radio tower… good, revolving converyer… hokey, pit toilets… bad (especially for the chick element).

  3. Rumour has it they are bidding for the winter olympics!!!
I have skied from Chimbulak, bin right to the top. Very scary on a single chair lift. No ski patrol or first aid stations in sight. The pistes seem natural and ‘unpisted’! lotsa moguls. Kind of exciting. Too much so once you realise that rescue after legs breaking is likely to take a while. The piste is quiet, no one to notice you bleeding to death. But at least the risk of collision is low compared to the Alps.
Anyhow – its a big piste, but just one big long one. And that’s all. Good but not enough to sustain a week’s skiing holiday!
By the sophistication of the survey, you could say that Kazakhstan’s tourism industry is in its infancy!!! other top sites are the silk route and Chering Canyon!
