Oprah is Zulu?

Oprah Winfrey rather stunned a South African audience by claiming that she was Zulu:

Oprah Winfrey, the American chat show host, startled a South African
audience and baffled historians by claiming to be of Zulu ancestry.

As one commentator put it:

Local historians, however, were disinclined to believe
her claim, as there are few records of the Zulus having any connection
to the African slave trade. "If there were Zulu people taken as slaves
they would have been taken eastwards by Arab traders or Portuguese to
their South American colonies," said one.

"Those who ended up in North America, say in Mississippi where Miss Winfrey comes from, were mostly of West African origin."

I guess it is theoretically possible but my sketchy knowledge of the history of the area and period would make me doubt it. The sort of timescale we might be talking about, say 1600 to 1800, the Zulus were highly expansionary themselves, being more likely to be conquerors than conquered. I havea feeling this more about gaining viewers in Soth Africa than anything else.

Of course, those with greater knowledge please do correct me.

  1. I thought she was Irish!

  2. It would be very hard to prove or disprove.
My understanding is that people from west African moved south, conquering or displacing the people on the way. Nomads now living in marginal areas were the original dwellers. This covers quite a wide area including all of Zimbabwe. If correct, this means that Robert Mugabe is no less a colonialist than Cecil Rhodes. I can’t confirm that the Zulus were part of this migration.
If the Zulu’s originated in say modern Nigeria, then clearly, some of their ancestors might have become slaves. The majority of slaves came from inland areas as the result of conquest. However, the coastal tribes would have used the opportunity to rid themselves of troublemakers and criminals.
Oprah may well share ancestors with the Zulus. This is just as likely as an Britain sharing genes from a Hugonaut or Finn.
However, I think she is making a politic point about “solidarity”. Odd really, because I thought the Zulus were very non-U in SA. Are they still separate from the ANC?
Tim adds: Ah, Yes, I see what you mean. The Bantu expansion. Certainly that could mean common ancestry but from what I remember the Zulu did not differentiate until they got down there to S Africa.

  3. As you know, I never have a bad word to say about Americans…
However, I’ve yet to find any white American whose family has been there for than a generation to not have at least ‘some’ Native American blood. Americans are essentially a mongrel people and will claim whatever they want for their own nefarious purpose.

    Monjo:
My citizenship is US. Ethnically I’m an eclectic mix of Irish, German, Austrian, Russian, Hungarian, Jew, Gypsy and a little Scot by way of Australia (no, I don’t know the full story behind _that_ one). Elements of family have been here since about 1740 (via Nova Scotia, I believe…northern wetbacks in other words).
But not a bit of American Indian.
So there’s one you have “met”.

I am tempted to add (so I will) that, with frightfully few exceptions, American blacks haven’t the 1st clue about tribes or tribalism in Africa.

  7. Monjo:
Genetic studies have shown that around 30 percent of white Americans do indeed have Native american ancestry.
That doesn’t include the Hispanics from Mexico who are mixed Native-Spanish BTW.

  8. PS — a great many white Americans also have African ancestry, especially those who live in the southeast.

Well…an infinity more Tim. Note, however, that they are Central American Indian (Guaymi), not US-types.

  11. I am South African -not Zulu though, the way most people took Oprah’s comment here was with a bit of that renowned American ignorant arrogance, but that doesn’t mean we disdain.
Tribes have moved around for centuries and if we are going to trace them back won’t we all come from the same place anyway?
The Zulu kingdom is a prolific and respected one- can’t bame someone for at least wanting to have anscestoral connections.
    Hambegashle!
    (That’s Zulu for “Go Well!”)
