Aircraftman Shaw.

Nice piece about TE Lawrence today.

Late in the morning on May 13, 1935, a middle-aged motorcyclist swerved
to avoid two cyclists in a leafy Dorset lane. He lost control, flew
over his handlebars and hit the road headfirst. Six days later – 70
years ago today – he died, having never regained consciousness. The
motorcyclist was T E Lawrence, the hero of the Arab Revolt, the causes
and consequences of which have an ongoing significance today.

I bring it up simply to add a little factoid, during his time as Aircraftman Shaw (he joined the RAF under an assumed name) grandfather Worstall was, I believe, his commanding officer for a time.

My father once found himself in command of a journalist from the yellow press, name of (I think) O’Connor, who wrote under the pen name “Cassandra”. He’d been running a hate campaign against P G Wodehouse and so my old man set him to scrubbing floors, again and again. Only time in his life that he ever abused his authority he told me. Bloody enjoyable though.

  2. I am lead to believe he actually was passing the post boy, and without being crude maybe he turned his head and let his atention focus on.. well, we have all followed a bicycle and I might even admit to having admired a pert (female) pair of buttocks myself to the danger of other road users…
