The Englishman has chosen who to vote for. I trust that he is suitably grateful to Tony Blair and his reform of the House of Lords that actually allows him to vote for this man, the Marquess of Lothian?

Wouldn’t it have been Tony Benn who allowed us to vote Lords, strictly ex-Lords, into the Commons?
Tim adds: Well, no. Benn gave up his peerage, Ancram hasn’t. Before Blair’s reforms of the Lords, Ancram would have been a member of the Lords since the death of his father, and thus ineligible to sit for the Commons. I’m not sure what happens if he tries to be one of the 92 elected peers.
Sorry, I didn’t make myself clear: all I meant was that Ancram would have been free, thanks to the former Lord Stansgate, to renounce his peerage and then stand for the Commons.
Many more might vote for the estimable Ancram and his chums if I can persuade them that my little notion is true:- Why are Labour so keen to have a Council Tax revaluation? Why does a government need an up-to-date value for every house in the land? Because then it can apply Capital Gains Tax when you sell your house. It will help itself to 40%, or whatever, of the difference between what you get for your house and its Council Tax valuation.
