That Mother Jones Article.

Crooked Timber flags up an article in Mother Jones which is highly critical of Techcentralstation, a place which regular readers will know I write for.

No doubt you will all read and make up your own minds, which is as it should be. I’d add just one further set of facts to it. The writer of the Mother Jones piece:

Chris Mooney is a senior correspondent for the American Prospect

This comment from Jane Galt, and this further from QandO.

In short, either both places are guilty of doing something naughty or neither place is guilty of doing something naughty. As I have only once been given a subject for an article at TCS, and only once been given a talking point (the same piece, called Entrepreneurs of the World Unite and it had nothing to do with any corporate sponsor or climate change) in the year I’ve been writing there I tend towards the latter view.

The Mother Jones piece has a Pacific Research Institute advertisement at the top. Chris Mooney is therefore being paid, indirectly, by that institute for the piece. Do we now say that what he has said is pimping for the Institute?

One response

  1. It annoys me how people point to the funding of research by ExxonMobil and imply that this somehow invalidates the research. If ExxonMobil’s interests are threatened by a lobby of well-funded and highly politicised scientists then of course it is going to fund some research of its own. It goes without saying that the funding which is provided to the Green lobby group comes from squeaky clean sources and the research is nothing but pure disinterested science.
