Paddy Power and Papal Betting.

Nice piece in the New York Times on Paddy Power taking bets on the Papal Conclave. (This Crooked Timber post is interesting on the other markets.) One comment:

Therefore, if the smart money is telling it right, the next pope will
be one of the following three men: Joseph Ratzinger, the 77-year-old
German who is dean of the College of Cardinals; Carlo Martini, 78, the
former archbishop of Milan, perhaps the world’s most powerful Roman
Catholic archdiocese; and, on their heels, Jean-Marie Lustiger, the
78-year-old former archbishop of Paris who, Mr. Power’s helpful Web
site says (with questionable historical accuracy), would be "the first
converted Jew ever elevated to the papacy."

Well, yes, quite. I believe that this guy started out as a Jew.

There’s a bet that I’d make a book one; which will come first, a Jewish President of the USA or a Jewish Pope?

  2. If I was one of those Cardinals I’d have my hearing aid transciever with me to pick up a little vacation money to spend on the way home from the conclave.
It’ll be interesting to see if there are any big moves in the odds after everybody is locked in.

  3. ‘Ullo ‘ullo, Tim, again.
Just me popping in to tell you and your readers I’m transforming my little blog this week into a Conclave-Pope-centric tour-de-force.
Tuesday I will be highlighting some Papabili and my thoughts on their chances, including such trivialities as the Regnal Name I believe they will choose for themselves, once elected.
My recent piece has to do with US MSM coverage of the Pre-Conclave Mass, but it’s more a commentary on MSM itself.
    Cheers,
    Victoria

  4. Of course, it isnt exactly certain that St. Peter was ever Bishop of Rome – and even if he were the title of Pope didn’t come until much later.
