Modern Art Eh?

A quite remarkable piece of modern art is opening for the public’s pleasure:

Mark McGowan, 37, will display pictures of himself scratching the vehicles in Glasgow and London in an exhibition this week.

He
said he had "keyed" 17 cars around the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow’s
West End in March and 30 vehicles in Camberwell, south London.

He
said: "I pick the cars randomly. What I have been looking at are issues
of property and linking it with art and performative action.

"Is
it jealousy that causes someone to key a car? Hatred? Revenge? There is
a strong creative element in the keying of a car, it’s an emotive
engagement."

One justification?

He said of his latest stunt: "I do feel guilty about keying these
people’s cars but if I don’t do it, someone else will and they should
feel glad that they’ve been involved in the creative process."

The truly shocking thing is to find that not all arts administrators are complete wallys:

But the Scottish Arts Council did not approve.
Michelle Jordan said: "We support art that engages the public and gives
them the choice of whether to see or experience it for themselves.
"In
this case that choice has been removed. He (McGowan) is more likely to
get a visit from Strathclyde’s finest than any funding from us."

I still would stll argue that the Scottish Arts Council, along with all of the other such councils, are a waste of space, time and money, should be abolished and the taxes returned to fructify in the pockets of the populace. But will admit that at least one of them appears to be employing a rational human being.

One response

  1. What is the difference between Arts Subsidy and the vandalism in the story?
At least the owners of the cars can claim on the insurance. Arts subsidies come from our pockets and there is no escape.
