I know I mock the Guardian a lot but here’s their obituary of Dave Allen, a fabulous comic, and they’ve given him a damn good write up. I remember his show from the 70’s and early 80’s, remember how much I used to look forward to it. Plus one of the funniest evenings so far, seeing his live stage show when he took it on tour, almost certain that it was at the Theatre Royal, Bath. Back then we still had the weird Sunday opeing hours, 7 to 10.30, and he deliberately timed the show so that we could all get one in before and after the act. From the obit:
And then there was the
West End stage – "In case you wonder what I do," he would tell the
audience, "I tend to stroll around and chat. I’d be grateful if you’d
refrain from doing the same."
and a snippet of infromation that goes a long way to explaining his sense of the absurd:
His father, Cullen
"Pussy" O’Mahony, who died when David was 12, was the general manager
of the Irish Times, the paper on which his brother Peter later worked
as a journalist.
Pussy was also a drinking partner of Brian O’Nolan (Flann O’Brien/Myles na Copaleen), then an Irish Times columnist,
The Telegraph’s obit is here:
"He’s a blaspheming atheist on the side of the angels."
That isn’t a bad way to be remembered.
The Guardian also has a page of quotes:
"We spend our lives on
the run: we get up by the clock, eat and sleep by the clock, get up
again, go to work – and then we retire. And what do they give us? A
fucking clock."
And the closing line of all his shows? This, from an affirmed atheist:
"Goodnight, thank you, and may your God go with you."
If you haven’t seen his shows, or have and want more, Amazon has a best of DVD. Well worth it.
