Always wondered about that word…
doubtable, re-doubtable? 😉
Tim adds: Pretty sure that the second does not use the first as its root. From redoubt, meaning a type of fortification, I think, therefore redoubtable, somebody you don’t want to attack?
Kathy took the words out of my keyboard! The moment I read the post and saw “redoubtable” (and I knew the meaning), I thought “Funny word, isn’t it?” And I thought I would post a comment just on that word. And BANG! Kathy had beaten me to it.
Synchronicity? ** Insert Twilight Zone music here **
Actually, no. Redoubt comes from the Italian ridotto, meaning ‘place of retreat’. Redoubtable comes from the French redouter, meaning ‘to dread’, which is related to the French douter, from whence comes ‘doubt’.

Oh… and anytime you want to distract me for a bit, do feel free to start a discussion on word origins.
Umm. But I was pretty much just commenting on my instinctive reaction to the word. And teasing a bit.
Tim adds: Sooo, Tim tries to act all clever and gets slapped down. Quelle Surprise.
