More on the Great British Cuisine.

Tyler Cowen links to the BBC site on the 100 things we learnt in 2004. That will probably bear more studying. Tyler is rather saddened by this factoid:

Lasagne has replaced chicken tikka massala as the favourite dish of Britons.

Now, what’s wrong with that? One indigenous food replaced by another? Surely we all know that chicken tikka massala was invented in England? (By incredulous Gujeratis trying to fulfill the strange obsession for the gravy that we insist upon with our food.) And do you not remember the discovery of the recipe books of Richard I’s chef, that clearly showed lasagne as a local dish? (Although what it tasted like some centuries before the tomato reached the Old World is more debatable.)

Just goes to show you how closely we remain in touch with our cultural roots. Eh? What?
