Tsunami Update.

Headline in the Observer:

Are world leaders playing politics with aid funds?

Well, they’re politicians, what do you think they’re doing? Definition of the species.

The picture is not helped
by the apparent confusion over who is in charge. Is it the United
Nations or is it the new ‘core group’ unilaterally set up by the United
States and which also includes Australia, Japan and India? Surely world
leaders are not already playing politics with the disaster?

Unh hunh, looks like they are indeed playing politics and dominance games.

The UN, as the only
international agency with the ability to do it, must be given the
central role in co-ordinating this relief effort. There has to be a
central point through which all these assessments are channelled and
priorities set, and the UN’s emergency co-ordinating office has to be
that point. Anything resembling a free-for-all will lead to duplication
and confusion, with the potential to make matters even worse in some
areas.

And you’re doing it too.

  1. Since the US et al are doing the work whilst the UN claim the credit when they have no-one on the ground apart from people looking at World Heritage sites and schools(!)….
perhaps this will show the UN for what it is – a talking shop for undemocratic or sleazy countries who score points against those countries that do the work. Add the UN to the list for destruction.
Tim adds: Add it to the list? David, you mean it wasn’t already on your list?

  2. Playing politics with the Asian tsunami

Faster than the wave itself, a new and particularly odious meme has raced around the world – apparently the United Nations is doing nothing to help
