Ever Wonder Why the Arab World is so Good at Science?

Just a little snippet from a blog new to me, Isaac Schroedinger. (Get your trackbacks working Isaac, we’re going to need them.):

This article forgot to mention
that the Saudi authorities at the ports of entry confiscate any item
that has a Jewish connection. For example, books written by Jews are
confiscated. Einstein and Feynman are banned in Saudi Arabia.

Explains a lot eh?

  1. OK, I haven’t been to KSA in quite a while, but I did live there for a few years in the 70’s.
    Whilst there I had with me, as part of my small private library, three books written by a gentleman called Dr Jochanan Kapliwatzky and published by Rubin Mass, Jerusalem and stating in clear print ‘Printed in Israel’. They were books on Arabic Language and Grammar and were, I understand, written for the use of members of the IDF who were learning Arabic.
    The only item I had confiscated from my personal effects when I arrived there was a rather fine icon on wood I had of Jesus Christ – I’ve always regretted that I did not leave it elsewhere for the duration of my time there.
    Perhaps I was just lucky that my Arabic grammar books were let through.
