Saskatoons.

Boris Johnson is his usually funny self writing about the European Union Regulations on the importation of saskatoons. He does, however, slightly get the wrong end of the stick. He blames our own Food Standards Agency for their (correct) implementation of the EU rules. The anger, vitriol and denigration would be better directed at the very existence of those EU rules. Just a thought, but are we certain that creating the most vibrant, dynamic and innovative economy on the planet is consistent with rules imposing a two year bureaucratic delay on the introduction of a Novel Food? No? Then get rid ofthe rule eh?

  1. Not really, Tim. The enforcers share equal blame — for, if the police refuse to enforce a manifestly-stupid law, then it becomes as nothing.
Ditto the FSU. If they didn’t prosecute butchers who serve customers IN THE WAY THAT THE CUSTOMERS PREFER, what, exactly, could the EU do?
Parachute a brigade of weights & measures enforcers into Leicester?
A pox on the law-creators, yes. But an equal pox on those who choose to enforce them.

  2. FSA, sorry.
