Drivelling Idiots.

Where oh where are we going to find an Opposition worthy of the name?

The Conservatives will support the Government’s national identity card Bill next week despite severe misgivings among members of the shadow cabinet about the legislation.

Drivelling idiots. In a political sense for they have failed to open up clear blue water between them and Nu Labour. In the grander sense because the legislation is grossly flawed, both in original design and in detail. It’s simply an abomination that has no place in a free society.

Update. Do go and read Chris Lightfoot, not just this post but scroll around for more. Playing a blinder he is.

  1. The Tories seem to be suffering from that all too common ailment of Oppositions when confronted by an apparently successful Government – the belief that they must be more Catholic than the Pope to win. Sadly they have not learned from John Howard, George Bush or even Maggie Thatcher that faced with Tweedledum in power and Tweedledee out of power the people will always choose Tweedledum.
Howard, Bush and Thatcher all showed that opening up a clear distinction between themselves and the Left, winning over the disenfranchised and standing on firm principles are the path to victory. Nu Labor or Mirror Labor are the same thing .. it is time to be proud of being Conservatives.

  2. Big, but not too big as to stop us keeping track of them

The Guardian has more on the Conservative decision to back ID Cards next week, and it’s all down to a single, simple overriding principle – opportunism.
Tory strategists feared they would be wrongfooted if they were seen to be soft on crime, asylum…

  3. If it’s any consolation, there are many in the party who are absolutely livid this morning. Why Michael Howard would want to trigger another euro-style civil war in the party, only six months before an election, is beyond many of us.
We will have to continue the good fight from within.

  4. Yep I’m definetely voting UKIP now.

I was going to vote Conservative at the next election. Not now. It’ll be either UKIP or a spoiled ballot, (actually a written message to the candidates and/or their agents who must view spoiled ballots to agree they’re invalid).

I’m with David B. on this one. This was practically the first bit of news I read this morning and boy did my heart sink. The Conservatives have betrayed virtually every one of their core constituencies and I’ll be damned if I’ll reward that sort of behaviour. They’ve even been stupid enough to attack Dear Leader on his prosecution of the war, which is the only Labour policy I support.
The Tories need to be sent an unambiguous message. If that results in their destruction as an electoral force then so be it. I’m voting UKIP.

  7. Well, I’ve sent a private message to the only Tory MP I know personally. Don’t know how much good it will do but from this very unscientific sample of readers and commenters they’ve lost a number of votes and gained none.
