Reports on the effects of the European Union rules on the disposal of refrrgerators:
The property giant Brixton, which owns both sites, said yesterday it was putting a plan together to start dealing with the fridges before Christmas. But with two more mountains, at nearby Chadderton and Failsworth, there are now an estimated 120,000 fridges awaiting disposal in the region.
Add together the number being fly-tipped and the similar mountains across the country and we do appear to have something of a problem. The reason is this:
Under European regulations, all fridges must have ozone-depleting CFC-filled insulating foam removed before disposal.
We also see that it has caused a massive waste of resources as:
Months of discussion about who is responsible for the fridges have been held between Environment Agency executives, landowners, local authorities and MPs.
Almost all of those on the money meter are paid for out of our taxes.
Environmental matters are one of the areas where the new EU constitution gives the Union even more power. on current evidence this would be a good idea for what reason?
