He remained attractive in old age and a gallant escort. On one occasion, when he was in his eighties, he and his then (married) girlfriend were attacked by a mugger; Brome cooly karatechopped their assailant in the throat and was rewarded by a bottle of whisky sent by the husband and addressed to “The Lion of Bloomsbury”.
