We really do need more public service ethos:
Tied into that is the public service ethos. Brownite thinking wants a limit to the spread of the market in public services, not only because of the practical problems involved in marketising everything, but for moral reasons, too. There is a public service ethos, and it needs nurturing if our public services are to make further progress.
I agree. More social workers who allow children to be tortured to death because have not had the correct training, more police hiding five miles away while women bleed to death, more posties and their intense devotion to the sanctity of the public mails, more pen pushers, pimples pustulating over paperwork, more indeed, of everything that an inane and self-interested bureaucracy can devise to torture and frustrate the free.
The public service ethos: I’m alright Jack and sod the poor bloody citizen.
