So that explains it then. Who the hell was Godot? From today’s Telegraph:
The recent death of the actor Peter Woodthorpe has brought to light a little-known fact about Beckett’s impenetrable masterpiece, Waiting For Godot.
Woodthorpe created the role of Estragon in the original production in the 1950s, and once told a friend of mine the reason for the play’s title. No religious symbolism here, however much theatre academics might wish it.
“Beckett wrote the play in French,” he explained, “and at the time there was a notoriously slow French cyclist called Godot who always came last in the Tour de France. That’s why Beckett chose the name. When the play was performed in Paris the line, `We’re waiting for Godot’ brought the biggest laugh of the evening.”
Having never met Woodthorpe, I’ve no idea if this story is true, but, even if it isn’t, it should be.
