Wassef Ali Hassoun is reported to have been murdered by decapitation. Jeff makes the comment:
I predict Zarqawi will make a fine rug for some motivated Marine.
I’m not sure if Zarqawi and his boys really understand what they’ve done. It isn’t just the despicable murders of the various innocents. This time it’s a US Marine. There are rumours that he had gone AWOL, that he was trying to desert. None of that matters to the Corps. The motto is “Semper Fidelis” usually translated as “Always Faithful”. Some might take this to mean faithful to America, or to the Constitution, or to the Commander in Chief, and it contains elements of all of those. But what it really means is always faithful to the Corps, and to those who make it up, their fellow Marines.
Their isn’t a single member of the Corps, from the aged widow of one who fought on Iwo Jima to the rawest recruit at Parris Island (yes, families consider themselves part of the whole) who would not happily risk the gates of hell to find, capture and deal with those who killed this young Marine. The idea of fighting against the US Marine Corps is scary enough, but now it’s personal. The largest and most thoroughly integrated body of professional fighting troops on the planet is now looking out for and eager to deal with one individual man. Zarqawi.
No, I don’t think he quite understands what he’s done.
