Syria Sanctions

Outside the Beltway has a small piece about the US imposition of sanctions on Syria. There’s also this little piece from the Economist :

UBS was fined $ 100 million by America’s Federal Reserve to settle charges that it sent dollar bills to Cuba, Libya, Iran and Yogoslavia in violation of American sanctions. The bank, which operates a depot in Switzerland that issues new bank notes and retires old ones, said it would restrict business to Swiss financial insitutions in future.

There’s several points one could make about this, like the extra-territoriality of US law. But the most importnat is that when these guys say ” don’t trade ” they’re serious.
